Emory Baldwin, AIA, CAPS
Principal Architect
Emory is the founder and co-owner of FabCab and is principal architect with ZAI inc., a firm specializing in socially sustainable housing that responds to the changing needs of people over their lifetime. Emory has designed a range of residential projects including senior housing and multi-family mixed-use developments. He was the recent chair of the Northwest Universal Design Council, a coalition of multidisciplinary professionals that focuses on promoting inclusive design in the housing industry and led a team of designers to win first place in the city of Portland’s Courtyard Housing design competition in 2007. He is also the recipient of a National AIA 2009 Small Projects Honor Award as well as the CAPS (Certified Aging in Place) designee of the year for 2009. There has also been significant media coverage of his award-winning home through magazines, radio (NPR), and pod casting (AIA). Emory has been a speaker at numerous national and international conferences on ‘Universal Design’ and design for aging and holds a master’s degree in architecture from the University of Washington where he wrote his thesis on “Housing in Response to the Human Life Cycle.”

Maura Parente, IDSA
Design and Marketing
Maura is an industrial designer and has focused much of her work on human-centered design. She brings a thorough knowledge of business development and management to FabCab along with her design expertise. Maura most recently was a consumer experience designer at the Institute for Human Centered Design in Boston where she worked on local to international projects ranging from user-based design research and architectural projects to being a pivotal player in expanding the design non-profit’s business. Maura also was previously a program director at a skilled nursing facility where she developed programming for people with a range of abilities and needs. Maura has spoken at length about Universal Design pertaining to its application in environments, education and health care. She holds a Master’s degree from Pratt Institute in industrial design.

Guy Paulsen, RBDT

Guy is a Residential Building Drafting Technician who specializes in timberframe design & development of timberframe dwellings. Guy brings over 20 years of resort and project management experience to the FabCab Team. Before returning to his continued studies in residential design, Guy was the VP & General Manager of an award-winning mountain resort in southern interior of British Columbia. He is very familiar with resort developments as well as with projects remotely designed / manufactured then delivered throughout North America. These often would range from modest to large scale residential homes and multi-unit developments.

Don Argus, AIA / LEED GA
Architect
Don is an architect with a holistic approach. He helps FabCab with project implementation and stock plan development. He is experienced in a broad range of project types, including residential work ranging from low-income urban housing to high-end waterfront homes, as well as social service facilities, building envelope remediation, historic preservation, adaptive reuse, urban infill, cottage developments and urban design. His interests include urban regeneration, historic preservation, universal design and walkability as aspects of sustainability. He was drawn to FabCab by their goals of mainstreaming universal design and bringing good design to a wider audience through pre-fabrication. Registered as an architect in Washington and New York states, Don holds a bachelor’s degree in architecture from Syracuse University and a certificate in design firm leadership and management from the University of Washington.

Chelsea Gorkiewicz, AIA / LEED AP

Chelsea is an architect with a love for small homes, sustainability, and prefab design. She brings ten years of experience in residential design, construction and project management to the FabCab team. She has a background in green prefab design and is continually searching for ways to make sustainable design affordable. Her latest interests include Passive House design, post-disaster shelter, and alternative building materials. Chelsea holds a B.S. in Architecture from the University of Michigan and a Master of Architecture from the University of Washington.

Program Manager
Bruce is co-owner of FabCab and is a program/project manager specializing in business development, information technology, and digital media projects. He helps FabCab with business planning, operations, software platforms, website design, and social media efforts. Bruce brings over 15 years of computer expertise to the FabCab team. Focusing on roles in software and people management, he has worked in environments ranging from startups to large corporations. Bruce holds a B.S. in Computer Science and a B.A. in Music from Pacific Lutheran University.
